Value-based care looks great on paper. Physicians win – and earn more – by keeping patients healthy. But this simple concept is filled with complexity that's hard to navigate alone.
These five truths can help guide how your practice approaches value-based care and how to choose the right ACO.
Truth 1: In value-based care, quality trumps quantity and outcomes drive income.
Do more of what you love — working directly with patients and guiding them to better health. Being rewarded for value lets you focus on what matters instead of treating patients like tasks on a to-do list. And the best part — better patient outcomes lead to increased financial opportunity for your practice.
Truth 2: Data leads the way to healthier patients.
Value-based care requires better data so you can focus on the right patients and provide the most effective and preventive care. You should find yourself treating wellness instead of mostly sickness. And with the right partner, you can have smart technology that overlays onto your EHR so you can see clinical documentation gaps and care plans at a glance.
Truth 3: The primary care physician becomes the quarterback.
Value-based care appropriately positions primary care physicians as the patient’s quarterback and leader of their care. You’re now taking responsibility for what happens with this patient, even outside your office. You call the shots and are rewarded for it.
Truth 4: The rewards are life-changing for physicians and patients.
You should be able to bring in more revenue even while seeing fewer patients. Doctors are incentivized to coordinate care, eliminate redundant testing and avoid unnecessary procedures and hospitalizations. Patients get more support between appointments and clearer guidance on preventative care eligibility. All told, it feels like the way medicine is meant to be.
Truth 5: You can’t do it without a good partner.
If you’re a physician considering value-based care, you’ll need help to be successful. A great partner is one who will shoulder the upfront financial risk, help you accurately document the condition of your patients, handle care management and patient coordination and offer you clear performance reports so you always know where you stand.
"When I was a practicing internist, the only way to improve your practice was to see more patients. There are only so many hours in the day. Value-based care gives primary care physicians a path to support their life’s work and even extend their careers.” - Dr. Mark Montoney, Medical Advisor
